After celebrating the first or second birthday, the next common and important step for a parent is to enrol their child in best-suited school. In the initial days of schooling, most of the children accept the change in routine but for some it takes time. A child comes through different challenges, i.e. new learning, an accomplishment of homework and class work, understanding the teachers, making friendships, staying long hours at school e.t.c. As parents are the first and most important teachers to their child. If parents and families are involved in their child’s school, he performs well and generates better feelings about school. Help him every point he feels down because support of parents is the key to do well academically. There are many ways that parents can support their child’s learning at home and throughout the school year.

Build a good relationship with your child’s school:

Parents should know the physical layout of school building i.e. play-ground, principal office, classrooms, cafeteria, sports room, auditorium and the medical room. This will help you to sensitize your child about academics and studies. Never miss any parent-teacher meetings if scheduled by the school. Visit the school frequently, spend some time with your child in the school this will help him feel good about school.

 Build a good liaison with your child’s teacher:

Parents and teachers are the role model of a child. He follows and copies them and act accordingly.  He feels good and happy when he comes to know, that, his parents and teacher have good liaison and know each other. Meet your child’s teacher frequently and let the teacher know that you are seriously concern about learning of your child’s learning. Maintain a good contact with the teacher and exchange your contact numbers. Moreover, winning the trust of teacher for exchanging information about your child education. In short, a parent should develop a partnership with the teacher for enabling learning environment.


A Child should complete the Reinforcement activity (RA) daily:

Reinforcement activity extends classroom learning and helps a child practice important skills.  It also helps a child to develop a sense of hard work and to accomplish responsibility. Sensitize your child that homework has significance and it needs to be accomplished every day. You can help your child in the due course by creating an effective and enabling environment, setting a study corner, establishing a regular timetable for homework, and removing distractions such as the television and social phone calls during homework time.

 A child should be prepared for tests:

Tests play an important role in determining a student learning strength and his position in the classroom. Parents should play their role in helping the child to be prepared for the test. Parents should take pretests and build the child’s learning habits on a daily basis. This will help him be more prepared for exam days.

 Don’t let the child miss a class:

Make sure the child should not miss any class, and he goes to school on time every day. Because he learns something new every day, when he misses his class he will miss new information and knowledge. If your child is missing a lot of classes due to illness, make sure to check with the teacher about any work that needs to be completed. So your child will not be left behind and he will feel good after recovery from illness. Sometimes students want to stay home from school because of assignments, the problem with class fellows and another issue at school. If you think there is a problem at school, talk to the child and probe the teacher actually what is causing the problem.

 A Child should be responsible and work independently:

Taking responsibility and working independently are important qualities for school success. Encourage your child to be responsible and work independently by establishing reasonable rules. Make it clear to your child that he has to take responsibility for what he does, both at home and at school.  Help your child to break down assignments into steps, and accomplish them stepwise.

 Healthy baby performs well in school:

When a child is healthy and is full of energy, he will be for sure active throughout the day. When he will be active he will learn more and more and more. A parent should provide the nutritious meal to their child. Kids who take breakfast have more energy and do better in school.  Establishing a proper timetable for eating and developing the sense of eating is very important. A healthy baby sleeps well. Children need the right amount of sleep. Lack of sleep causes irritable behaviour and make the child confuse to pay attention. It’s important to have enough bedtime routine.

 Share your own experience of school:

When parents tell about their past experiences, child listen carefully them and wants to copy the same. If parents share their experience of school time, how they used to behave in the school, how they did their homework, how they attended annual exams, what they scored and how their attitude towards teachers was. Also tell him that you still in contact with your school teachers, if possible meet your teacher along with your child. Then the child will start accepting the school and will respect his teachers and will try to build the long-term relationship with his teacher as you did.
